A sure sign that your hair is damaged is if it feels dry and brittle. When running your hands through your long locks, they may feel thinner towards the end and you may have visible split ends. You may also notice more shedding. The longer your hair, the more prone you are to knots but if you are finding your tresses are exceptionally tangled and not relieved by a quick brush through then this can be another nod to dry, damaged hair. Your hair may also be lacking shine and appear lifeless if it’s particularly damaged.
Often it is the way we care for our hair that causes the most damage, from incorrect products and a bad brushing technique to sun damage and heat styling. This is why it’s not only taking care of your tresses that’s important, it’s how you do it as well. Start by selecting the correct products for your hair- if you have shampoo for oily hair, but your locks are actually super dry then switch it out ASAP! Use a hair mask regularly and invest in an SPF for your hair to protect against the sun’s heat and damaging rays.
- Using a hairdryer or styling tools such as straighteners will also impact the condition of your hair. The direct, intense heat dries out your hair and can cause split ends. Turn the temperature down and ensure you protect your mane with a heat protectant spray.
- Brush through your hair gently, especially after washing, and use hair ties sparingly. Hair ties tend to pull on the hair which puts pressure on your scalp and follicles.
- Ensuring you wash your hair regularly and keep on top of your hairdressing appointments are also an important factor in keeping hair in tip top condition.
- Colouring or chemically processing hair with treatments such as hair relaxing can also cause major damage, maintain and lock in hydration with targeted products.
The best way to swiftly repair your damaged tresses is by treating it with the appropriate hair care products. Hydrating, moisture-packed shampoo and conditioner are key. Use an intensely nourishing mask, like our Babassu Oil Deep Treatment Masque, to condition, strengthen and repair damaged hair. Naturally derived hair care is a great option as it ensures you avoid any nasty ingredients such as sulfates and parabens which are known to further damage hair.
As long as your scalp is not damaged, hair follicles should grow back within one to two months. If the scalp and follicles are badly damaged then it can take up to four years until they can regrow hair, but using a specific range of natural hair care products consistently will help speed up the process. Maintaining a consistent and targeted haircare regime will put you in the best position to restore both damaged follicles and hair health overall.
